Derby Arts Council
The goal of the Derby Arts Council is to encourage, promote and foster appreciation, participation and support for the Visual Arts. The Derby Arts Council will showcase local Artists and provide an exhibition gallery for Derby and the surrounding area to enhance the cultural arts experience.
The Gathering Space Gallery is open during the regular library hours.
If art is in the Community Room, it may not be available for viewing at all times.
See the United States in photographs
The Derby Arts Council’s most recent exhibit invites viewers to travel around the United States via the camera lenses of nine gifted photographers. “Oh, The States I Have Traveled” features 66 photographs on display in the library’s Gathering Space Gallery.
Whether they were on vacation, assignment, visiting distant family members, or simply cruising back roads looking for a great shot, the photographers present the beauty and simple appreciation for our magnificent country. Artists whose work is in the exhibit are Gary Behrens, Don Birmingham, Nicole Brown, Mike Ciskowski, Bill Fales, John Gabor, Sheila Maksimowicz, Steve Marler, and Barney Tull.
Marc Durfee, art coordinator at the Derby Recreation Center curated the 180 photographs that were submitted for consideration in the exhibit. Durfee was tasked with evaluating the photos, considering color vs. black and white, size, and framing. There were so many impressive pictures that eliminating any was a challenge.
The show will be up through Aug. 7, and because so many children come to the library during the summer while the photos will be on display, there will be activities to encourage the kids to engage with the exhibit.
In addition, the public is invited to meet the artists at an evening reception 6:30-8 p.m. June 2 in the Community Room at the library. Refreshments will be provided and the photographers will share stories about how they found and captured the photos they love.
For more information regarding this exhibit, or to purchase any of the photographs in the exhibit, contact Tami English at the Derby Public Library, 316-788-0760.
Photographs from the last art reception
The Derby Arts Council hosted an artists’ reception for the elementary school children whose work is currently on display in the Gathering Space Gallery and Community Room. Thank you so much to the community for your support. We had 385 people attend! To see all the pictures from the reception, please view the album on the Derby Arts Council Facebook page.
The High Wall Gallery is located in the Business/Genealogy Area of the Library.
“Animalia” brings High Wall Gallery to life
Work from local artists will entertain and amaze you, as you view photographs and artistic renderings of wildlife in the High Wall Gallery. Photographers Nicole Brown, Mike Ciskowski, Bill Fales, Steve Marler and Barney Tull, and artist Skip Krelbach put their skills on display in “Animalia” with photos and paintings of animals of all kinds.
One image in particular challenges the viewer to determine whether it is a painting or a photograph. Can you figure out which one it is?
“Animalia” will be on display through Sept. 27. Each work is available for purchase. Questions regarding purchase or the exhibit in general can be directed to Tami English at the Derby Public Library, 316-788-0760.
