The Derby Arts Council
at the Derby Public Library

The goal of the Derby Arts Council is to encourage, promote and foster appreciation, participation and support for the visual arts. The Derby Arts Council will showcase local artists and provide an exhibition gallery for Derby and the surrounding area to enhance the cultural arts experience.

There are two gallery spaces in the library that are managed by the Derby Arts Council: the Gathering Space Gallery and the High Wall Gallery. The Gathering Space Gallery is in the library’s lobby and includes the Community Room. When art is on display in the Community Room, it may not be available for viewing at all times. The High Wall Gallery is inside the library, located in the Business/Genealogy area of the library.

"Art from the Heart"
by Kansas Art Guild

The show will feature artists using pastels, oils, watercolors and acrylics. Since this exhibit features multiple artists working with different styles and mediums, there will be a variety of works that fit the taste of almost every visitor.

Kansas Art Guild was organized with the goal of promoting art and artists. It was formed in 1977 and has continued to grow over the last 47 years. With the opening of MARK Arts in Wichita, KAG now meets on the first Tuesday of the month at 1:00 pm at that location. The guild holds exhibitions throughout the Wichita area. We are fortunate to exhibit the beautiful and thoughtful works from their artists.

More information about the Kansas Art Guild is available on its website at www.kansasartguild.com.

Derby Arts Council will host an artist’s reception in the Community Room on Friday, February 23, 2024 from 6:00 to 7:30 PM. We invite you to meet the artists, have a snack on us and enjoy live jazz played by Kurt Aiken. Light refreshments will be served and all ages are welcome to this free event.

"Prairie Chickens Go Boom"

Three Derby residents take us on a photographic journey of Kansas

What do booming grounds, and photography chicks, have in common? The Greater Prairie Chicken’s elaborate mating rituals. Derby Photo Club members, Donna Bates,  Shelia Maksimowicz, and Betty Thompson attended a Greater Prairie Chicken workshop in March of 2023. It took place in Kansas on a “lek”. A “lek” or booming ground is where the Greater Prairie Chicken courtship displays take place.

The Prairie Chicken species numbers have declined significantly due to habitat loss, and is now considered “threatened”. We invite you to come and view their Greater Prairie Chicken gallery, along with other photographs of rural Kansas from our workshop weekend. The gallery will be on display at Derby from February 4 to March 24.

We invite you to be our guest at an artist reception in conjunction with Art with Heart showing in the Gathering Space Gallery on February 23, 2024 from 6:00 to 7:30 pm. Light refreshments will be served and artists will be on hand to speak about their work. Come enjoy live music from Daniel Baird aka "Handpan Dan."
