Walls of Gathering Space Gallery are better than a refrigerator

The Derby Arts Council invites you to enjoy “Elementary Art, Creativity by Derby Kindergarten-5th Graders,” currently displayed in the Gathering Space Gallery of the Derby Public Library. Works of art, submitted by elementary age students from home school, USD 260 and St. Mary’s School, will be on display through mid-May.

This is a wild and exuberant collection that includes all kinds of art materials, including pastels, markers, construction paper, pencils, watercolors, and tissue paper. Some 3-D portraits, employing accordion folded paper, will make you smile.

Animals are always a happy subject, with caterpillars and dogs a popular theme. Still-life scenes of flowers in vases are great subjects for young and old artists to master, and bright farm scenes with patchwork fields have great detail. Make sure you see the carefully drawn dreamcatchers as well.

This exhibit will delight viewers and the Arts Council is committed to encouraging young artists in our community. There will be a reception for the public on Thursday, March 30, from 5:30 to 7 p.m., and all lovers of art, supporters of grade school students, and fans of cookies are cordially invited to attend.

For more information on the opportunities to display art at the Derby Public Library Gathering Space or High Wall gallery, please contact Tami English, at 316-788-0760.

"In the Moment" now up in High Wall Gallery

The Derby Public Library and Arts Council invites visitors to enjoy “In the Moment,” photographs contributed by Sandy Stucky, Belle Plaine artist, currently on display in the High Wall Gallery of the library. The exhibit features 18 uniquely focused and intensely colorful photographs remind us to pay attention to the details of daily life.

While not large in dimension, each photograph gives viewers pause to consider the time of day or location the photographer chose to capture these images. Approaching storm clouds, a stern turkey buzzard, and the elation of a jump in the lake are represented along with the simple framing of a windmill near a prairie church. Stucky’s photos feel both spontaneous and studied. Library visitors are sure to enjoy this collection.

This photo exhibit will be on display through May 31.  For information regarding the photos, the artist, or future opportunities to be considered for artwork to be displayed in this space, please contact Tami English, at 316-788-0760.
