The Derby Arts Council
at the Derby Public Library

The goal of the Derby Arts Council is to encourage, promote and foster appreciation, participation and support for the visual arts. The Derby Arts Council will showcase local artists and provide an exhibition gallery for Derby and the surrounding area to enhance the cultural arts experience.

There are two gallery spaces in the library that are managed by the Derby Arts Council: the Gathering Space Gallery and the High Wall Gallery. The Gathering Space Gallery is in the library’s lobby and includes the Community Room. When art is on display in the Community Room, it may not be available for viewing at all times. The High Wall Gallery is inside the library, located in the Business/Genealogy area of the library.

"Creation"
by Trinity Bayliff

Thoughts from the artist:  Inspiration comes from everywhere. My inspiration has come from many places, such as nature, history, personal feelings, and fashions of previous generations— and, of course, my best friend, Pinterest.

When creating dress designs, I begin with a silhouette. Should it be slim and hang straight? Or will it be a ballroom gown? Perhaps something in between? When I began concept sketches for my 2023 prom dress, I knew I wanted an art deco look. Based on my knowledge of historical fashion, I made the skirt hang straight and slightly boxy, then embellished it with gold beads and pearls in geometric patterns. It is not a recreation but blends modern and historical fashions to create a one-of-a-kind dress— and it has a pocket! Once I have a concept, I begin draping the pattern using muslin and began sewing from there.

To those interested in trying something new, I say to you - open your mind to the world around you; perhaps inspiration will strike when you least expect it. Use the world around you to drive your art.

We invite you to be our guest at Trinity's artist reception Friday, May 17 from 6:00 to 7:30 pm.  Light refreshments will be served and Trinity will be glad to answer questions about her artworks. TJ Bayliff will be accompanying the show with his guitar.
