Derby Arts Council

 

The goal of the Derby Arts Council is to encourage, promote and foster appreciation, participation and support for the Visual Arts. The Derby Arts Council will showcase local Artists and provide an exhibition gallery for Derby and the surrounding area to enhance the cultural arts experience.

The Gathering Space Gallery is open during the regular library hours. If art is in the Community Room, it may not be available for viewing at all times.

Current Exhibits:  

GATHERING SPACE GALLERY:  Fourteen members of the Kansas Art Guild present an exhibition of 61 paintings in a variety of media including acrylic, oil, pastels and watercolors.  The exhibition, sponsored by the Derby Arts Council, includes a variety of subjects that include landscapes, still life and portraits.  Participating artists are Leland Alexander, Shirley Alexander, Janet Butler, Maria Ctibor,    Sharon Engle, Nancy Luttrell, Darleen Miller, Rebecca C. Miller, Cheryl Myer, Brenda Robertson, Kay F. Rogers, Cassandra Smith, Helen Smith and Bonnie Tymeson.  This exhibit continues through January 25, 2015.

The Kansas Art Guild began as a group of local artists that formed in 1977. The guild currently has 65 members and meets monthly at the Wichita Center for the Arts. Member artists bring examples of their recent work to the monthly meetings where they are critiqued and judged by the guest artist / speaker. Visitors are welcome. The meetings are held the first Tuesday of the month beginning at 1:00pm. The goals of the Kansas Art Guild are to promote art and artists in Kansas, to develop the skills of members and to provide opportunities for members to display their works.

HIGH WALL GALLERY:  The Derby Public Library is also pleased to feature an exhibit of photographs featuring activities and personnel at McConnell Air Force Base.  Derby resident and talented photographer Barney Tull created this stunning exhibit, which is located both in the entryways and in the Library's Business and Genealogy Center. 

SPECIAL FEATURE FOR AIRPLANE EXHIBIT:  Unique audio of a refueling crew in action is available using your cell phone and a QR code, located on information sheets displayed near the photographs.

Receptions:  The public is invited and encouraged to attend gallery receptions when scheduled. Receptions provide the public with an opportunity to meet the artist(s) and discuss their exhibit on a one-on-one basis.
